NEWSLETTER SEPTEMBER 2015

There are several events taking place locally over the next couple of months which you may wish to support. Please find details below and we look forward to seeing some of you there.

  1. Peace Vigil in Godalming

Local churches are responding to a call for a peace vigil under the slogan “Bridges not Walls” this coming Friday by organising a peace vigil in support of the Palestinian struggle. It will take place at the Pepperpot in Godalming High Street. Everyone is invited to attend.

Friday 25 September 4.30 – 5.30 pm

PepperpotGodalming High Street

  1. Campaign Against the Arms Trade (CAAT)

Israel is one of the most heavily armed countries in the world and many of its weapons are imported from the UK. Therefore we welcome the founding of a new group CAAT in Guildford. Although it will campaign against the global arms trade generally, this will increase the pressure on the UK government to cease arms exports to Israel. The group will hold its inaugural meeting in October and representatives from both CAAT and Veterans for Peace, an organisation of ex-service men and women who now campaign for peace, will address the meeting.

Thursday 1 October 7 – 9 pm

St Nicolas Church Centre, Bury Street, Guildford GU2 4AW

  1. Take Two Theatre Performances

A reminder about two performances of this newly-commissioned play on Palestine in Ascot on 24 October and Reading on 21 November. The play is a passionate engagement with the conflict in Palestine, focusing on the illegal demolition of Palestinian homes by the Israeli authorities. Please see the attached leaflet for further details. Tickets for both performances can be purchased in advance from: www.stbartstheatre.org or by phone on 0333-666-3366

  1. Green Party Event on Palestine in Dorking

The Green Party in Dorking is organising an entire evening devoted to Palestine with a very interesting range of speakers. PSC member Tim Coldicott will give a brief historical introduction to the conflict and Linda Ramsden who is chair of ICAHD-UK (Israeli Committee against House Demolitions) will speak about house demolitions in the West Bank. This will be followed by a short musical interlude after which there will be two contributions about firsthand experience of visiting the West Bank. The chair of West Surrey PSC, James Poke, will then say a few words about the question of a one-state or two-state solution for Palestine/Israel before closing remarks by Jacquetta, the Green Party parliamentary candidate for the Dorking constituency. It promises to be a very informative and thought-provoking evening. Zaytoun produce from Palestine such as olive oil, dates, maftoul and za-atar will also be on sale.

Tuesday 3 November at 7.30 pm

Green Room Theatre (behind Dorking Halls)

  1. Public Meeting with David Sheen

We are very fortunate that a particularly well-informed and engaging speaker has agreed to give a public talk in Guildford at the invitation of West Surrey PSC. David Sheen is a Canadian-Israeli journalist and film-maker whose presentation is entitled “The Bullet, the Ballot and the Boycott”. A flyer with further details will be available closer to the date.

Tuesday 24 November 7.30 pm

St Nicolas Parish Centre, Bury Street, Guildford GU2 4AW
