with Canon Ed Pruen, Saturday 4 July 6-7pm

Ed will present the short film he produced following a sabbatical last autumn describing his reactions to the Israeli Separation Barrier through his paintings. We will also hear about his other experiences in Palestine and Israel. This will be followed by a Q & A session.

Ed introduces himself as follows:

My Lebanese aunt was always throwing things at her TV. I never understood why. It was not until I finally visited the Land we once called Holy that I began to understand how badly informed I was, felt her frustration and how easy it is to sing "O Little Town of Bethlehem" without any connection with reality. The history and politics have as many narratives as there are people - but the issues concerning human rights are far easier to grasp.

My most recent trip was with my wife, Margaret. We stayed in the shadow of the Israeli Separation Barrier. It's different at night. It unnerves you. The only opportunity to settle the nerves was a cup of tea in the nearby Walled Off Hotel - full of irony; it is the hotel with the worst view in the world.

Through paintings and drawings, I chose to "draw attention" to the many anomalies that exist concerning this medieval siege of Palestinians. It raises so many questions, and I don't pretend to know the answers. Yet as it grows by the day, destroying and humiliating, the questions are increasingly coming our way. Above all it confronts us with the realities of racism and collective punishment of innocent families. Palestinian lives matter, and they deserve our support with "Beautiful Resistance".
