You will be glad to hear that the French government has published new regulations obliging importers and retailers to label products originating from Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territory.

According to the report in Haaretz, the notification, published yesterday, is headed “Notice to economic operators concerning the indication of origin of goods originating in the territories occupied by Israel since June 1967.”

Citing the November 2015 European Commission guidelines, and “in order not to deceive consumers”, the new government regulations “say it is necessary to mark the precise place from which goods originating in these areas came, and not mark them as products of Israel.”

Sahar Vardi is a young Israeli woman who was conscripted to the country’s Defence Force at the age of eighteen but reused to serve because of her opposition to its military occupation of Palestinian land and was therefore imprisoned as a conscientious objector. She informed us that there was not really contact between Israeli Jews and Palestinians on the basis of common social intercourse, which is underlined by the fact that Palestinians working in Israel are for the most part confined to menial and manual work. ( In the occupied territories contact between the two is almost non-existent, except for the relationship of coloniser and colonised.)

This report from Brighton PSC about the visit by young musicians from Gaza is well worth reading!  They are hoping to organise another visit in June which might include our own event.

Report on June 2016 visit of 4 young musicians from Gaza and their teacher

At 8 pm on Monday (26/09) night in the United Church in Godalming Sahar Vardi will speak about her experience as a conscientious objector against her conscription to military service in Israel. She received a sentence of several months imprisonment for her action. Most talks on the Israel/Palestine situation deal with the subject in general terms whereas the subject of Sahar’s talk is highly focused and very unusual. However, conscientious objection to military service in Israel is increasing. I’m sure that Sahar would be willing to answer any questions you may wish to put to her.

The United Church is situated on the A3100 just past the Fire station and just before Godalming town bridge.
